The free ride was introduced today by Uber’s US president, Anthony Levandowski, and Canadian chief executive officer, Marc Cohl.
“You can travel from anywhere in the United Kingdom to any destination in Canada and still have the ability to pay your bill,” Levandowski said in a video message announcing the free ride.
The deal was announced on Thursday as the government announced that Uber drivers who have received approval from the Canadian government will no longer be required to pay an extra $1 fee for passengers in transit.
“The government’s decision today to allow Canadians to travel without the burden of additional fees and taxes makes travel across the border safer and more convenient for Canadians, and we are thrilled to offer this option to our drivers,” Levander said.
“We will continue to work with the Canadian authorities to make sure this option is available for everyone who wants to travel safely.”
Levandowski also said that drivers will no more be required for insurance purposes.
“When a driver provides insurance to a passenger, they are legally responsible for that passenger and their passengers’ medical expenses and any damages caused to their vehicle,” he said.
In Canada, the company will pay the full cost of the driver’s insurance premiums for the two hours between the time they are supposed to pick up passengers at the border and the time the driver is supposed to arrive.
